Wind Drawings
These drawings were made by the wind. A pen outfitted with sails and suspended over some paper makes a visual record of a day's wind conditions.
Inspiration for these drawings came from a leaf. While in graduate school, I was looking for a way to use art and design to foster stronger connections between people and the environment. While thinking about the differences between humans and nature, I became curious about the differences between man-made and natural forces.
While standing on a train platform as a high speed train the turbulent air eventually settled and was replaced by a gentle breeze. The leaf gave me an idea for how to visualize the movement of air. I came across it while cross-country skiing. Its stem was stuck in the snow and as the wind blew, its edges carved into the snow.
When I returned home, I cut plastic bottles into different shapes and tied them to sticks in the snow. Left all day to blow in the wind, the pieces of plastic cut into the snow making a record of the day’s wind. Wanting a more permanent record, I constructed my first wind drawing apparatus and Process.2005.01 was born.
Curiosity about the forces behind each drawing led me to develop the digital wind drawing processes that followed. In 2015, after a long hiatus from making wind drawings with analog processes, I started making them again.
