Passages in Time and Space
This interactive, animated drawing is generated by the movement of wind, time and people.
In a projection, groups of colored shapes are pushed by the wind as they move across a grid of colored circles and leave a trail behind. As people enter the space in front of the projection, new shapes are added to the drawing tracking their movement.
If the shapes drawn by people’s movements collide with ones made by the wind, a burst of color appears encouraging them to move their bodies with, or against, the wind and participate in the drawing process.
For this installation at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts, weather instruments were placed on the roof of a nearby building to measure wind speed and direction and transmit the data to a computer. A camera positioned above the projection tracked the motion of viewers.
