Michigan Engineering Recruitment Brochure
I worked for the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering for two years while my was in grad school. A few years after I left, they asked me to design an admissions brochure with the goal of recruiting more women to the college.
We wanted a piece that spoke directly to the audience and I proposed that we put the brochure inside a reflective sleeve so the recipient can see their reflection as they read “Who will change the world?” and see three gear-like shapes, each one made with a single letter rotated around a center. The letters are “y,” “o,” and “u.”
As the recipient pulls the brochure out of its sleeve, they’re asked ”What will change the world?” The question is centered on the cover and surrounded by decorative elements made with mathematic and scientific notation. Inside the brochure, the decorative elements accompany profiles of students, faculty and alumni and images of the college and related activities.
Michigan Engineering Viewbook
Inspired by the viewbook's title, “The Shape of Things to Come,” I developed a visual language for this booklet that used primary colors (two of which are Michigan's), subtle patterns made with squares, circles and triangles, and rectilinear shapes atop colorful backgrounds filled with gradients.
The viewbook starts with four vellum pages starts that shows readers what engineers before summing it up ”It’s About Shaping the World” set in a triangle shape with other lines of text forming a triangle in the opposite direction. After that, the viewbook showcases the value of Michigan Engineering in three sections, each one with a colorful divider.
This piece was printed on 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper and won a Silver Award in the 2003 Ann Arbor Addys.
